INTRODUCTION TO NEONATAL SERVICES AT UCHS & CH, LAHORE.

The University of Child Health Sciences, Children’s Hospital, Lahore has one of the largest neonatal healthcare delivery setups in Pakistan. The department of neonatology was initially a 40 bedded unit having a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a high dependency unit (HDU), and special care unit (SCU) that provides comprehensive care for unwell and premature babies.

As a part of tertiary care hospital, this neonatal unit is providing level-IV training to pediatric specialists in neonatal pediatrics. Along with providing quality newborn care, this department is involved in a lot of teaching activities all over the country.  In 2018, another 40 bedded second neonatal unit was approved to extend the neonatal services and it will be functional soon. As there was no high-risk obstetric unit and in-born neonatal unit on-site for management of high-risk neonates, the plan of an Institute of Feto-Maternal & Neonatal Medicine is there to deal with high-risk pregnancy as a mother, fetus, and neonate will be managed under one roof. Institute of Feto-Maternal Medicine & Neonatal Medicine shall consist of a 20-bed obstetric and fetal medicine unit and a 50-bed inborn neonatal unit, with subdivisions of NICU, HDU & SCU.
